The Story behind the Photo Book

artin Lukas is the Photographer and the Leader of the 10 New Bali Book Team based in Singapore. Martin and the Photographers travel around the 10 New Bali destinations, with their passions to capture Indonesia’s beauty and promote it through photos worldwide.


Martin and the team compiled their photos into a photobook with the title the 10 New Bali, unique destinations. The book itself initiated by the Republic of Indonesia’s Ambassador for Singapore, H.E. Ngurah Swajaya and presented to Indonesia’s Independence Day in August 2018.


The 10 new Bali first edition succeeded in ‘poisoned’ people overseas to know Indonesia’s tourism destinations besides Bali.


Now Martin and the team present the 10 new Bali Book second edition, which more informative and more fascinating photos. It equipped with Q.R. Code on each destination that integrated into the same place on the website.


The book created as a coffee table book, the quality of the pictures and the information presented will mesmerize you. It is a must-have item.

What We Do

August 2018.

The 10 New Bali is President Joko Widodo project, proclaimed in 2016 to elevate Indonesia’s tourism. The 10 New Bali consists of:

  1. Lake Toba, North Sumatra
  2. Kelayang Cape, Belitung
  3. Lesung Cape, Banten
  4. Old City and Thousand Islands, Jakarta
  5. Borobudur Temple, Central Java
  6. Mount Bromo, East Java
  7. Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara
  8. Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara
  9. WaKaToBi, Southeast Sulawesi
  10. Morotai, North Maluku

As the biggest archipelago in the world, passed through by the ring of fire and Wallace’s Triangle’s centre, Indonesia has its own beauty from nature, culture, people, and animals.

These beauties must be orchestrated and optimized to create world-class tourism. The tourism sector has been included in President Joko Widodo program as one of the leading sectors. In 2015 the 10 destinations were selected as strategic destinations for tourism, also known as The 10 New Bali. Each of these destinations has its own unique beauty.

Since 2014-2019 tourism sector has become the top three contributors to our GDP. The number of tourists increased significantly, and it has opened many job opportunities. But, the pandemic stroke the whole world. For Indonesia, the tourism sector was the worst hit. I realized that the government needs to work harder to aid the recovery of tourism. We need to strive to the utmost, and I appreciate the community’s involvement that proactively keeps working on the recovery of Indonesia tourism. This photo book is one of the examples.

I really appreciate the Initiator, Photographers, Writers, and the team’s effort to produce such an excellent photo book. The writings give us essential information about each destination. The illustration map gives us a visual guide as to what we can do there. The photographs entice us to come and visit the destination. Also, the integration with the website thru QRCode will give you more feelings and information.

The Beauty of Indonesia It is hard to disagree that Indonesia is a country with diverse beauty. You will be pleasantly amazed that Indonesia is filled with beautiful beaches, magnificent mountains, fabulous lakes, many diversified forests, countless animals on land and underwater, plural ethnics, multiple cultures, languages, and culinary. Once you come to Indonesia, you will enjoy your trip because you will meet Indonesia’s generous, friendly people awaiting with their heartfelt hospitality.

Indonesia is a vast country which is almost the same spread over a distance as if you fly from London to Moscow. Many Indonesians do not even have the opportunity to travel across Indonesia.

Many islands in Indonesia are as beautiful as the famous attractive Bali. Beyond Bali, Indonesia offers a beautiful mesmerizing feast to the eyes, stretching from Sabang to Merauke, from Miangas to Rote.

President Joko Widodo launched ‘The 10 of New Bali’ five years ago because we have many beautiful places, just like Bali if not more. If Bali is known as Nirvana, Indonesia has so many other Nirvanas that lay across the country.

Indonesia has, among others, the Pearl of Pacific, Morotai Island in North Maluku, the heart of Wallacea triangle, Wakatobi in South East Sulawesi, the sunset heaven and the home of the last dragon, Labuan Bajo & Komodo National Park in East Nusa Tenggara, the white sandy beaches and one of the most beautiful Volcanoes, Mandalika Lombok in West Nusa Tenggara, one of the giant active caldera, Bromo Tengger Semeru in East Java, the harmony of Buddist and Hindu temples in the midst of Muslim community, Borobudur and Prambanan Temples in Central Java & Yogyakarta, the small beautiful islands in the North Coast of Jakarta, Thousand Island, the integrated resort with a view of the mother of Krakatoa, Tanjung Lesung, the home of gigantic rocks, Tanjung Kelayang Belitung in Bangka Belitung and the largest volcanic lake in the world, Lake Toba in North Sumatera. That is not all. Indonesia offers more beautiful places that you must visit.

I appreciate the initiative taken by H.E. Ngurah Swajaya, and execute by Martin Lukas and his team to launch the second edition of their book. They have accurately captured the beauty of Indonesia through images with their hearts. Their adventure in Indonesia has brought a different perspective and feeling. Every time they return to Indonesia, the beauty of Indonesia pierces more deeply into their hearts.

I welcome the publication of the second edition of the photo book on the 10 New Bali: Unique Destinations and Investment Opportunities in Indonesia which was initiated by Ambassador Ngurah Swajaya when he served in Singapore as well as the team of dedicated photographers from different countries who admire the beauty of Indonesia through their lenses.


The first edition has impressed readers, including many leaders during the ASEAN Leaders’ Gathering and the IMF & World Bank Annual Meeting held in Bali, Indonesia in October 2018. The book was launched on the occasion of the Leaders’ Retreat between Indonesia and Singapore to mark the 50th Anniversary of bilateral relations.


President Joko Widodo has targeted tourism as one of the leading sectors in Indonesia’s economy. Tourism not only contributes significantly to the national GDP but also provides significant opportunities for employment and income generation to the people. Prior to Covid-19 pandemic, tourism was expected to reach 25 million in 2024; therefore, various destinations were designated as priorities supported by good infrastructure facilities and qualified human resources. The 10 New Bali has certainly enriched many unique tourism destinations in Indonesia.


COVID-19 pandemic has significantly disrupted these targets since tourism is one of the worst affected when travelling was put to a stop. Despite this shattered situation, however, we are convinced tourism will be back flourishing.


Finally, after enjoying these stunning pictures, I wish you will be able to visit and enjoy the magnificent destinations, even astound you further with the sights, sounds and the tastes of Wonderful Indonesia.
